The hidden costs of AliExpress dropshipping (and why sellers eventually move on)

Almost every dropshipper starts the same way: an AliExpress supplier, a Shopify store, and orders forwarded one by one. It's a perfectly good way to begin — low risk, no inventory, real market feedback within days. But talk to sellers a year in, and you'll hear the same story: somewhere along the way, the model that made starting easy started quietly eating the business. Here's where the costs hide.

Shipping times that kill repeat business

The listed price looks unbeatable until you factor in 15–30 day delivery. Customers may accept it once; they rarely come back for it. And since repeat customers are where e-commerce margins actually live, slow shipping isn't a service issue — it's a growth ceiling.

No quality control

Your supplier ships directly to your customer, and you see the product for the first time when the complaint arrives. Refunds, reshipments and dispute fees don't show up in your product cost — but they absolutely show up in your margin.

Inconsistent everything

The same product ordered twice can arrive in different packaging, a different version, or not at all when your supplier's stock silently runs out mid-campaign. Just when your marketing finally works, the supply side wobbles.

Zero branding

Every order arrives in a generic gray bag, often with an AliExpress receipt inside. You've paid to acquire a customer and then handed the unboxing moment — the one physical touchpoint you have — to nobody.

Your time

Manually forwarding orders, chasing suppliers on chat apps at midnight, mediating disputes. It's manageable at 5 orders a day and crushing at 50.

None of this means the model failed you — it means you outgrew it. The natural next step, and the one most scaling sellers take, is moving to a sourcing agent or fulfillment partner in China: goods bought in small bulk at better unit prices, inspected before dispatch, stored under one roof, and shipped with faster lines and your own branding. Orders flow in automatically instead of being forwarded by hand. That transition — from improvised chain to owned chain — is exactly the bridge we've built our fulfillment service around, because we watched so many sellers hit this identical wall.

Start on AliExpress, absolutely. Just recognize the moment your business tells you it's ready for the next stage — usually right when the hidden costs become impossible to ignore.
