60,000 booths, one city: why the Canton Fair is still the center of the sourcing world

Twice a year, the global sourcing industry converges on one city: Guangzhou. The Canton Fair — officially the China Import and Export Fair — has run since 1957 and remains the largest trade event on earth. This autumn's 140th edition runs through late October and early November, with Phase 3 closing November 4, and will fill more than 60,000 booths across the sprawling fair complex.

The scale is hard to overstate. Buyers from over 200 countries. Every product category imaginable, split across three phases: electronics and machinery first, home goods and furniture second, textiles, apparel and health products third. Entire supplier ecosystems — factory owners, trading companies, component makers — all within a few halls of each other.

But the Canton Fair's real value isn't the browsing. It's the compression. A sourcing trip that would normally take weeks of factory visits across multiple provinces happens in days. You can compare five suppliers of the same product before lunch, hold the samples in your hands, and read the things no video call reveals — how a factory rep answers a hard question about tolerances, whether the quality story holds up when you push on it.

A few honest tips if you're considering the trip. Book your hotel months ahead; the city fills completely. Bring detailed product specs — conversations get serious fast when you can show exactly what you need. Collect every business card but verify every supplier afterward; a polished booth is not a factory audit. And wear comfortable shoes. The complex is measured in kilometers, not meters.

For us, the fair is a home game — Guangzhou is where we're based year-round, which means the supplier relationships on display those two weeks are the same ones we work with the other fifty. That's perhaps the most useful thing to understand about the Canton Fair: it's a snapshot of an ecosystem that operates every day of the year. Whether you visit in person or work through a partner on the ground, tapping into that ecosystem — not just attending the event — is what actually moves your sourcing forward.

If you do make the trip this autumn: it's worth it. There's still nothing else like it.
